Week of October 29th - Nov. 2nd

This week's focus is the Industrial Revolution.

Monday, Oct. 29th


Today students will be introduced to the Industrial Revolution by looking at what the Industrial Revolution was, where and when it began, and why it began. Then we will look at the rise of factories and railroads. Students will fill in their reading notes during a class discussion.

Today students will discuss how industry spread and new scientific discoveries and inventions that were caused by the Industrial Revolution. Students will discuss and fill-in their reading note guides during a class discussion.

Wednesday, Oct. 31st


Today students will move into chapter 19 section 3 which focuses on the effects on society and politics. Students will discover the impact of rapidly growing cities, what industrial life was like, and changes in the roles of women and children in society. These effects lead to new ideas on the role of government in society and new political philosophies develop like Liberalism, Utilitarianism, and Socialism. Students will discuss as a class while filling out their note organizer.

Thursday, Nov. 1st


Today students will discuss the industrial revolutions impact on art/literature and science/medicine. Students will look at examples of new artistic styles and read new literary styles and focuses. Students will discuss important scientific advancements and new ideas that emerge out of the Industrial Revolution, like the Germ Revolution, Einstein and his role in Physics and Charles Darwin, the Theory of Evolution, and Social Darwinism. All of this will be during a discussion in which students will fill out their notes.

Today students will decide if the industrial revolution was good or bad for society. They will look at the negative and positive consequences and then write 5 paragraph essay defending their position.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES!


Monday and Tuesday night are parent teacher conferences. I hope you will be able to attend the conferences especially if your son or daughter is struggling in my class. I have soccer off-season and will not be able to be at CJHS until 4:30. You should plan accordingly.

Week of October 22nd - 26th

This week will focus on the French Revolution and Napoleon's French Empire.

Monday, Oct. 22nd

Today students discussed the causes of the French Revolution, the major changes that took place during the French Revolution, the Reign of Terror, and the failure of the Directory and the revolution. They also checked the accuracy of their reading notes.

Enrichment Activity: Students may choose to watch a seciton of the Presidential debate tonight and writing a reaction paragraph about something they found interesting.

Tuesday, Oct. 23rd

Students discussed the French Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte by checking the accuracy of their reading notes.

Wednesday, Oct. 24th

Today students looked at Napoleon's achievements and failures. After compiling a list of the two they decided if Napoleon was a good or bad leader and used evidence to support their conclusions in a three paragraph essay.

Homework: Complete the Napoleon: Good or Bad essay (3 paragraphs)

 

Thursday, Oct. 25th

Students will review today for their French Revolution and Napoleon Quiz on Friday.

Homework: STUDY for Quiz!!!

 

Friday, Oct. 26th

Students will take the French Revolution and Napoleon Quiz.

Homework: No Homework, Enjoy your weekend.

National History Day

  • NHD students have three primary sources due MONDAY, OCTOBER 29th.
    • If your student got a source returned to them that needs to be replaced they must do so by MONDAY, OCTOBER 29th.
    • If your student did not turn in three secondary sources on Friday, Oct. 19th they must do so before Monday Oct. 29th. Otherwise there three primary sources will not be accepted and they will receive a zero for both deadlines.
  • We will be launching a CJHS NHD website in the coming weeks to help students navigate the source and project requriements. A blog update and a reminder text will be sent out to inform parents and students of its launch.

Week of Oct. 15th - 19th

Students reviewed for their test by playing Jeopardy as a class on Tuesday.

Tuesday, Oct. 16th


Students took their test over Chapter 18 Sections 1, 2, and 3.

Homework: Complete the reading notes from Chapter 19 Section 1 up to the section "The Rise of Napoleon" on page 3 by Friday, October 19th. The remaining pages will be checked for a grade on Monday, October 22nd.

Wednesday, Oct. 17th


Pre-AP:  Students meet to discuss source help and annotations. We also fielded questions and concerns students had.

5th and 6th Period: Students watched a video on the American Revolution from the series "America, The Story of Us." Students wrote down events they believed were influenced by Enlightenment ideas.

Homework: Complete the reading notes from Chapter 19 Section 1 up to the section "The Rise of Napoleon" on page 3 by Friday, October 19th. The remaining pages will be checked for a grade on Monday, October 22nd.

Thursday, Oct. 18th


In the morning students took the Explore test which is a pre-ACT test. The test went from 1st - 4th period. Afternoon classes watched a video on the French Revolution and worked on their reading notes in class.

Homework: Complete the reading notes from Chapter 19 Section 1 up to the section "The Rise of Napoleon" on page 3 by Friday, October 19th. The remaining pages will be checked for a grade on Monday, October 22nd.

Friday, October 19th


Students will be introduced and discuss the French Revolution. We will begin by looking at what it was, where and when it occurred, and how and why it happened. Then we will look at the events chronologically up to Napoleon's coup d'etat in 1799.

Due: Complete the reading notes from Chapter 19 Section 1 up to the section "The Rise of Napoleon" on page 3 by Friday, October 19th. The remaining pages will be checked for a grade on Monday, October 22nd.


HENDRIX RESEARCH SATURDAY!!!, October 20th


Pre-AP National History Day students are invited to come up to Hendrix library this Saturday to get a tour of the resources Hendrix has to offer the CJHS students. 1st period: 1 - 2; 2nd period: 2 - 3; and 4th period: 3 - 4. See the letter your student got last week for more information. Students were given a form on Wednesday that needs to be completed so student can check out books from the Bailey library.

October 8th - 12th

Sorry for the delay in updating this weeks schedule.

Monday, October 8th

Today students completed a chart that covered the achievements and discoveries of scientist during the Scientific Revolution. We finished these in class.
Homework: None

Tuesday, October 9th

Today we discussed the Enlightenment. We discussed what it was, when and where it occurred, why it occurred and how it began. We also looked at the major philosophers and their beliefs that helped change society.
Homework: Complete the chart if not completed in class.

Wednesday, October 10th

Today was a challenging day for students as they read either compared John Locke and the Declaration of Independence or Montesquieu and the US Constitution. Most classes were able to answer all but one question and will be given time in tomorrow's class to finish.
Homework: None

Thursday, October 11th

Today we finished up our comparison between Locke and the Declaration of Independence and MoMontesquieu and the US Constitution. After completing the comparison students will look at Absolute Monarchs in Europe during the 17th and 18th century by completing a chart looking at achievements of the monarchs.

Friday, October 12th

Pre-AP students discussed National History Day. we looked at the different types of sources students should be using and the difference between primary and secondary sources. We also gave out an updated schedule for due dates for the first semester.
5th and 6th period reviewed for their Chapter 18 Section 1, 2, and 3 test on Tuesday of next week by working on a crossword puzzle and/or preparing study materials (flash cards, study sheets, etc...)

October 1st - 5th

Monday, October 1st

In-Class: Students completed the 18-1 Reading Note check. We discussed the effects (short and long term) of exploration.

Homework: NONE!


Tuesday, October 2nd

In-Class: Students worked on a letter to King DeStefano of Kingdom 1039 seeking funding for an exploration journey. They had to list 4 potential benefits and 2 potential risks they might face. This was a individual assignment that forces students to analyze the effects.

Homework: Finish Letter to King D.


Wednesday, October 3rd

In-Class: Students took notes on the Scientific Revolution. We discussed what causes of the Scientific Revolution and how it developed over time. After note taking we watched a took notes on a video that covered the Scientific Revolution and Sir Issac Newton. After that we watched CNN Student News to stay up to date with current events and watch a segment on previous presidential debates.

Homework:

Tonights assignment is optional and an enrichment activity. To help students think through who they are going to vote for students our encouraged to watch at least 30 minutes of tonight's Presidential debate. After watching the debate students are asked to write a reaction paragraph on anything related to the debate they found interesting. This could include an answer to a question, something they noticed about the candidates, etc... Remember this is OPTIONAL!!! This is due on Thursday, October 4th.

Thursday, October 4th

In-Class: Students will begin preparing to vote tomorrow. Students will discuss the different issues on the ballot, the candidates stances on different issues, take a PEW Research Center quiz to see if the are liberal, moderate, or conservative, and fill out a voter registration card. Students are encouraged to discuss their decisions with their parents.

Homework: NONE!!!!


Friday, October 5th

In-Class: Students will vote on real voting machines with a real ballot. Results for the entire school will be compiled and sent to the local newspapers.
